Mother according to Google
Curator - Tamar Elul
Merav Stark chooses the Google search engine as a reflection, and even a creator, of culture. She investigates which images appear when one writes the word “mother” in different languages or phrases such as “abandoning mother”, “loving mother”, and “frustrated mother.”
In this work, Merav reveals that a translation of the word mother will yield similar images in very different cultures, revealing that the idiom has become a global symbol that lacks authenticity. In works inspired by Barbara Kruger, Pierre et Gilles, and Robert Frank, Merav unveils the conservatism, stereotypes, chauvinism, racism and kitsch latent in the images and the meanings attached to the word “mother.”
This exhibition is dedicated with love and deep appreciation to Amos Weisz.
